About Munger Tourism Munger was earlier known as Monghyr in the British days, and has a rich cultural past. Situated in Munger district in Bihar, the town was famous for the manufacture of iron products like swords and firearms. It was conquered by Mohammad Khilji in 1197, and is mentioned as a place of strategic military importance in the chronicles of that period. During Akbar’s regime, Monghyr was the seat of power of his general, Todar Mal and later Nawab Mir Quasim shifted the capital from Murshidabad to Munger, to stay away from British control. Surrounded by the Ganges on three sides and Kharagpur hills on the other side, Munger is a nature lover’s paradise. Kashtaharni Ghat Kashtaharni Ghat is the place where river Ganges takes a bend and moves towards north, becoming Uttar-Vahini. It is because of this fact only that this particular ghat holds significance for the Hindus. History mentions Govind Chandra of Kannauj made a grant after bathing in the Ganges at Mudgagiri, on the occasion of Akshaya Tritiya festival, making its origin quite antique.

This was known as Ghanta Ghar or Quila Gate in 1970-80. Can any one say what is this called now a days? Quila Gate..

This is the shakti peeth in Munger. As per the folklore, the eye of Godess "Sati" fell here while God Shankar was performing Tandav Nritya holding body of Godess Sati in his hand.

Goenka Sivalaya ( Machli Talab) In the chain of beautiful temples Goenka Shivalay is one of the brightest name. Being one of the oldest, it is one of the acknowledged places for Hindu pilgrims. The Shiv temple is built in the midst of a big water tank, which is full of big and beautiful fishes. A rock-solid bridge road of white marble joins it from the main campus. Around the temple a very beautiful garden with flowers and greeneries are kept fully maintained. On festive days specially associated with Lord Shiva, the campus remains full of visitors and gives the impression of a mini mela.
